I am vulnerable... Please cheat me....

Do you graze through the newspaper or news portal every day? You will definitely stumble upon some news showing someone getting cheated. There are innumerable ways in which one gets cheated..... Innovation at its best! In most of the cases, if you analyze, the victim invites the perpetrator of the crime to inflict the damage on him/her.

Recently I read a news that a 59 year old man cheated around 35 ladies (in the age group of 45) and ran away with their cash and jewelry. His modus operandi is to contact the gullible ladies (mostly widows or divorcees) through newspaper ads informing that he is a divorcee and a businessman earning handsomely and wanting to remarry and settle in life. He then establishes contact with the applicant over phone and judges her naivety, meets her in person and promises to marry. He then informs (depending on his judgement of the lady) that he needs some money/jewelry for making marriage arrangements, as his money is tied up in business. He catches the fish with this bait and escapes. He then changes his 'sim card' and he will not be reachable. He continued this way.... till he was recently caught.

We have heard of several stories involving men changing their identity and cheating many ladies from different parts of the country. "I am not that person" - This was the title of the movie, based on such events. Time and again this repeats in different formats.

Through what is called as PONZI SCHEMES, several crores of innocent, poor, but greedy people have been cheated. Their hard-earned money is lost in a jiffy. How many families have been ruined.... But this does not seem to stop over the years. Every now and then, a different kind of scheme will be exposed. The scheme operator relies on the innocence and greed of the people. All they need is a scheming mind, a set of glib talking employees to fool the scores of people. Another avenue to cheat gullible people is what is known as 'chit funds'. Some of the Chit Fund companies dupe poor and innocent people of their life's savings kept for the daughter's wedding or some medical treatment.

Another disturbing trend is some big shots in society getting involved in frauds featuring millions and billions of rupees. They are already blessed with loads of money. What prompts them to undertake some unholy methods to make more money....., I really cannot venture to think.

Someone cheating on the spouse is an age-old practice. This happens both ways... It is on the rise as people started feeling that there is nothing wrong with it. You can see at least one news item in the newspaper every day. They go to the extent of killing their own babies in a bid to avoid detection by the affected person. It is a horrifying trend....

Sometime back, movies in different languages were released (Golmal in Hindi), wherein a person cheats his boss by sporting (and removing) a moustache and appearing as two brothers. Who is to be blamed? Finally the boss says that he is to be blamed more for his foolishness. Without the willing cooperation (unknowingly) of the victim, cheating is impossible. One has to be on alert mode all the time, to escape cheating.

The list of different avenues of cheating is 'inexhaustible'. People keep innovating....
