What should be taught to our wards......

Most of the parents wants their wards to live their (parents) dreams. “I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer, but could not. So, come what may, I will make my son an aeronautical engineer”. “I aspired to become a heart surgeon, but fate had different ideas for me. Hence I will see to it that my daughter becomes a heart specialist”. All of us would have come across such people.

First of all, we should realize that our children are brought into this world through us, by the will of God. It does not mean that we own them. The children have their own rights and aspirations. And they should be molded by their inherent talent and passion in that direction. Today, the world is wide open unlike a few decades earlier. We cannot even imagine the innumerable study courses available, each specializing in something, not even known to us earlier. And all have the potential to make them very special in their respective fields. Our aim should be to unearth the hidden talent in our children and make them aware of it. Then they can form their own dreams. We have the responsibility to get their genuine dreams fulfilled by our guidance and rendering whatever help that we can give. And not force our unrealized dreams on them. It is our duty. How they finally shape up is only due to their passion and sincere and smart work.

All the more, we have to make sure that they become law-abiding citizens, with good morals. We have to monitor (not control and spy on them) their activities closely so that they do not fall a prey to bad habits, because it is a vulnerable age. Keep an eye on the friends they hang around. Once we are assured of that, good things will automatically follow.

We, as parents should teach them that it is okay to fail in their attempts. And teach them how to take the valuable lessons from the failures and use them to their advantage in their future endeavors. They should be taught the fact that it is okay when they do not get what they aspired for. Whatever they truly deserve will come to them at the needed hour, by the Grace of Almighty.

Make them realize that fear is our worst enemy. They should be made to face the world with courage and never fear anything. Compassion towards fellow human beings is another important lesson parents should teach their wards. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have the comforts of life and many live in penury. Our children should be taught to help such people, as far as possible.

  1. Very true. Parental role should be to facilitate learning, acquiring skills, imbibe value systems etc.

Once matured the children should be supported to pursue & excel in their passion.
