Are we law-breakers.....?

By and large...., YES! Most of us tend to disobey 'the rules and regulations', right from our school days. The first reaction on some rule or regulation being made mandatory, is to oppose it and raise several questions, with the intention of not following the rule and regulation. May be that is in our blood! This behavior becomes more vociferous when we reach the 'college going phase'. We are unmindful of the others who unintentionally or intentionally might get hurt or affected by our obnoxious behavior. We start thinking that we are the supreme beings.

When corona virus is spreading throughout the world and every country is trying to control the spread desperately, some people (suspected of contracted the virus) tried to bye-pass the screening process. When a lock-down is enforced, some guys roam around the town without any purpose! They are unmindful of spreading the disease to other people around them. A 'genius' asked the police to 'show him the virus'. It is not only cheating the authorities but cheating ourselves.....

When the government or authority tries to bring any rule, and gives a time frame to implement it, we never bother till the last date. We expect the government to give 2 or 3 extensions to implement the rule. Even after the final extensions is over, only 30 to 40% will obey the rule. Others will opt for penalty (for not following the rule). If there is a possibility, they will argue and not pay the penalty!

The recent implementation of the FASTAG being made mandatory, to pass through the toll in the highways, is a classic example. After several extensions the government made it compulsory for all vehicles to have 'fastag' from 15th January, 2020. It was reported that only about 40% toll was collected through fastag and the rest went through the 'cash' channel. This continues even now. A person investing lakhs of rupees in a vehicle does not bother to get a fastag by paying a paltry amount of Rs. 200. The government was distributing fastag free of charge till 29th February, 2020. What a shame!

It is also reported that some of the people with fastag pasted in the windshields of the vehicle, do not recharge the fastag wallet. When they pass through the toll in fastag lane, toll charges cannot be debited as there will be insufficient balance. Then they insist on paying only the toll charges (by cash) and not the penalty. They create a big scene, thus delaying the vehicles in queue with genuine tags. It seems that some of the heavy vehicles who have to pay a higher toll charge compared to cars, use the same tag used for cars, thus paying less than the charge they should pay. We find innumerable ways to cheat the authorities. We are very innovative in maneuvering through the rules...! We are capable of innovating inventions!

Most of us at some point or the other would have disobeyed the road rules. We are always in a hurry and jump the red light, at will. We (2 wheeler riders) don't wear helmets unless we see the cops at a distance. The same applies to 'safety-belts in cars. Motor-cycles should be manufactured with the provision that unless the rider wears the helmet, the engine should not start...!

We throw garbage at will on the road and spit on the roads and walls. Well, most of us! But we would like to compare our cities to Singapore. No civic sense at all! We blare the music unmindful of the neighbors.

But for the salaried class, how many people (industrialists, practicing professionals) who fall in the income-tax paying bracket, pay income tax regularly? May be 10% (and it is my guess). With all these behaviors, we point an accusing finger at the politicians, as if they are the only wrong-doers!

Yes, generally, we don't want to obey any rule or regulation.... Most of us at least. It is the ground reality....
