Live a meaningful life

A sage gets a curse that he will be born as a pig in his next birth. And the next birth to that will be as a man. In order not to live the pig's life for long, he tells his son to kill the pig (in the sage's next birth) immediately after he locates the pig. He also gives the 'id' of the pig (like its color of skin and other features; as he is a sage, he knows all that!). In his next birth he is born as a pig as envisaged. The son is able to identify his father in the pigsty. He prepares to kill his father, as advised (pig). But the pig stops the son and says that he wants to live the full pig's life and he does not want to die soon. Even if it is a pig, it wants to live as long as possible and not die sooner.....

The same holds good for humans too. No one wants to die even at the very old age. Unless the government enacts a law, whereby all citizens above a certain age (let us say, 80 years, since I am 70 years now...!) will be killed, nobody will be ready to die. In one of Sujatha's (Tamil) novels (I think it is 'Sorga theevu'), he delves in this subject.

Anyway, no one has the right to end his/her life. Even as per law it is not allowed. Except in some critical medical cases wherein 'euthanasia' is allowed (in certain countries). It (our death) is the God's decision, which we have to abide by.

But when death comes naturally (due to old age, medical reasons, accidents etc.), we have to accept it gladly. Fear of death is worse than death itself. The one who is alive today may not see the light of the day tomorrow. That is the beauty of life. Death is part of the journey (rather its culmination). Everything in this world has a beginning and an end. Can we run a race without a goalpost? Even marathon race has its finishing post. There we rejoice at the end and give accolades to the one who has finished the race first!

A sentence when goes on without the full stop, will not be complete in its meaning. The full stop gives completeness to the sentence. So don't be afraid when the full stop has to happen. Make the words meaningful and the punctuation at the right places. Ultimately, the sentence has to be meaningful as well as beautiful and appreciated by every one, when the sentence is complete.

There are several people who made their sentences short and meaningful (and beautiful too). Swami Vivekananda (39 years), Poet Bharathi (39 years), William Shakespeare (52 years), Steve Jobs (56 years), Arthur Ashe (50 years), Bruce Lee (32 years) - to quote a few illustrious people who died young but lived most memorable and meaningful lives.

We do have to fulfill our duties in the given time. Travel in life as it comes and make it count. When death comes, receive it with both hands gleefully, without any fear. As much as possible, make it meaningful, beautiful and worthwhile.

Mahatma Gandhi : Live as if you were to die tomorrow; Learn as if you were to live forever.
