Not a shock... anymore...

Recently I got a message on 'whatsapp'. It reads as follows : 'One can go to Sabarimala along with his neighbor's wife and both are legal...!!! And the third one: no need to show Aadhar as ID proof too..! And the fourth one : wife can be male which is also legal as per 377..!!

In the space of a few weeks the above 4 verdicts were delivered by the Supreme Court, India. I am an ordinary citizen of India, who does not understand the laws or their interpretations. Why then one judge (out of 5 in the bench) rules the other way in Sabarimala verdict? She then clearly states that the court should not poke its nose in religious matters (not affecting the people). It should actually protect the religious sentiments of the majority people following the religion. In the case of 'Sati' (where the wife was forced to fall and die in the funeral pyre of her husband), it was justifiable to amend the law (prohibiting such practice).

And adultery is no more a crime punishable by law! The fall-out of this verdict has already started surfacing. Husband who really cannot accept the adultery of his wife (vice-versa is also true) murders the wife since he knows the law will not punish her. I have already seen some news paper reports, of late. Wife who encounters the adultery of her husband has to either put up with his extra-marital affairs silently or apply for divorce (or commit suicide). Only if she applies for divorce or commits suicide the law will come into place to punish the erring husband. There is no compromise formula for them to unite (by patching up).

A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) is already lodged in some court requesting to ban the serving of non-vegetarian food in trains. Tomorrow another person may appeal to have separate compartment for consuming booze.

My imagination runs wild, in the the aftermath of such verdicts... The following PILs may be filed by someone or the other, sooner or later...

1) Stealing or robbery is no more a crime! After all, the robber has the right to his livelihood. This is one avenue he finds it convenient for him. He cares nothing for the victim. The victim should have been careful! The robber's self-interest is important rather than anything else..

2) If somebody has to eliminate his enemy (for whatever reason), he can murder him and it would not be punishable by law. If the murderer goes to court to prosecute the victim (for the wrong doing done to the murderer) it may get procrastinated for several years. But the murderer wants justice immediately for which he has the right (according to him). So he finished him. No punishment for the murderer. Does he not have the right?

3) Embezzlement - punishable since it is a crime...Who said it is a crime? It is the victim's carelessness, neglect or gullibility that prompted the perpetrator to swindle. In what way he is wrong?

4) Causing accidents by negligent driving - not a crime anymore. He has the right to drive as is convenient for him. He has all the right in the world to drive as he sees it fit for him. "FOR ME' is more important than other users of the road. Okay!"

5) Consuming/peddling drugs - Can we consider this as a crime? Anyone must have the choice of what he should consume. The same way, he must have every right to deal with whatever item that will give him profit, right? Whether you buy drug from him or not is not his concern..

6) There is no discrimination based on gender. Is that right? Hereafter no separate washrooms for 'men' and 'women'! (There is a joke doing round already - if women of all age are allowed to enter Sabarimala (where only men were allowed earlier), he should be allowed to enter the women's hostel!)

Another guy utters that culture should change every 50 years. Who decides it is 50 years (or more or less)? Only where the reform is absolutely required (where it affects people) it needs to be changed.

We talk of individual freedom. The self is important and not the society as a whole. Freedom / Liberal existence without any restrictions will have far-reaching repercussions, from where we cannot retrace. It will lead to preposterous situations. If someone wants to do some thing, nobody can question him! He will do whatever, he is pleased with! Then how can anyone live in this society?

MY RIGHTS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN MY RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SOCIETY! My rights are supreme. Where are we going towards...? Stone-age? It will be utter chaos if it proceeds like this...
