Fear of the pandemic......
Pandemic (corona virus) is the talk of the world now. Any Tom, Dick and Harry is writing about the pandemic! Then, why not Theri....? One does not have to have any semblance of knowledge about the virus to write or talk about it! I can say, 'the elephant is like a big ball' (after touching it's stomach). A lot of information (fake, mostly!) about the COVID-19 is flying in the air, like the virus itself (WHO has confirmed that the virus is air-borne).
More than the virus itself, 'the fear of the pandemic' occupies the minds of most of the people. The fear of the pandemic should be feared more than the pandemic itself. By fearing about the virus, we will only aggravate the chances of contracting the virus. Most of the media has to be blamed for this hype. Every second, there is 'breaking news'. It is clear 'Zohnerism' (the use of a fact to lead scientifically and mathematically ignorant public to a false conclusion). They take a harmless data and skew it to present a draconian looking monster, to instill fear in the minds of the unsuspecting public.
The government, the police and the doctors are screaming every day, 'stay home, stay safe'. 'And when you need to go out on an unavoidable errand, please wear the mask, maintain social distancing, and when you return home, wash your legs and hands with soap'. Is there any problem in following these simple procedures? Absolutely not! But then, we are used to disobeying any command. Who are they to tell us what to do and what not to do! 'If the virus exists, show me the virus'. A man demands 'show me God for me to believe that there exists a God'. A small child retorts and asks the man who put that question to the child, 'show me your common sense'. 'I cannot show it'. 'Then you do not have common sense'. There are 'invisible' things existing in the world.
The world has already seen 100 years ago, a deadly 'Spanish flu' which claimed 50 million lives, which is about 80 times the death due to corona virus. The world population now is around 7.8 billion. The people affected now (as of the middle of July) is around 13.5 million, which is less than 0.2%. The death percentage is less than 0.01% of the total population. The population in 1920 was around 2 billion and the death of 50 million (due to Spanish flu) was around 2.5%. If we compare the death percentages of Spanish flu and corona virus, the Spanish flue death rate was around 250 times of the present one (due to corona virus).
I am not trying to justify anything. We should be careful and should not drop our guard. Follow the simple procedures and remain calm. Take whatever food possible, which will increase your immunity level. Do not venture out without any pressing reason. This is like any other disease. We need not over-react. We should avoid propagation of negativity in these circumstances. Take it in the stride and soon this corona virus will be history, which will find a mention in the text books only.
