Signs to confuse.... or help....!

Traveling takes most of our lifetime these days. Though we are blessed (!) with smart gadgets for communication with people in the nook and corner of the world, we need to travel a lot to fulfill our business and social obligations. It was during some such travels, I experienced some interesting things..... Behind any heavy vehicle (bus or lorry), you can notice a warning : LEAVE A GAP OF 10  METERS.  That is 32.8 feet (still cannot escape from the urge to convert meter to feet...!). While on the move (speeding behind a vehicle around 80 to 100 kmph), how could anyone think of or calculate to maintain such distance...? I feel it to be ridiculous. Instead it could be "MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE".  Depending on several factors like nature of the road, weather conditions, braking capacity of the vehicle you are in, you (or your driver) will be the best judge. This is what I think. May be I am wrong! Those days (once again...!) when the British system was being discarded a...

Word is mightier than the sword...

'Word' is mightier than the 'sword'. It can do a lot more. Battles have been won (or lost) by appropriate (or inappropriate) use of words....! Peace between nations is struck by diplomatic usage of words. Improper use of words could damage a relationship permanently. It can soothe the 'hurt' feelings. What it cannot do....? Some people have the habit of saying 'thank you' for everything a person does for them. But they would not really 'mean' that while their mouths utter those words! Though it might seem to be good etiquette, it is okay not to say 'thank you' all the time. But when you say that, you should really mean it. The same way, the word 'sorry' is also used most of the time, just casually. They would not carefully tread on the path before they firmly bang on your feet. But they will simply utter the word 'sorry' nonchalantly and keep on moving. What does it serve....? Some people use sarcastic remarks either ...

Comparisons are (not always)..... odious!

The other day, I was in the cabin of a bank manager, to get some work done. A man (whom I have seen occasionally) in my neighborhood, walked in briskly and had a few minutes chat with the manager. Then he went to a counter and attended to his business. He looked my age (or may be slightly younger....!). The bank manager then surprised me by saying that 'he is a lawyer and practicing still'. I asked 'what of it?' He then told me that 'he is 85 years old....'! I was really taken by surprise. I used to pride myself for being able to move around normally at this age(?).... (let us keep it a secret for now, okay). Compared to the lawyer's agility, I am nothing. I was left with no alternative but to compare with that young(!) man..... At that point, I decided to indulge in regular walking and some physical exertion.  Here the comparison actually helped me to better myself. 'See the marks scored by Mohan, our neighbor's son. He is also studying in your s...

Civic Sense....! What....?

One day recently, when I opened the door in my house, to see the outside world (after a siesta), I saw about 10 two - wheelers parked in front of my house restricting me going to the road. We in fact, had planned to go out in our car; but we could not get our car out from the shed as 3 motor bikes were parked in front of the gate. I had to look for the vehicle owners and ask them to clear off the space for us to take out our car. In front of our house, there is very good shade, thanks to two neem trees we planted long back. We do not mind people parking their vehicles in the shade, but they should respect our need to use the front-yard. We treat the public property (and private property of others!) as our own. We have scant respect for the other users of the public property. Let them suffer; we must feel comfortable. That is the attitude! Though the municipality has arranged for collection of garbage from all households every day, people still throw the garbage on the road. The gove...

My unique ID problem

Should I pat myself for being unique or regret for being one in a million...?? That is my dilemma...! I do not have a problem in leaving my finger prints in a crime scene. Hey...! Please don't jump to any conclusions.... Why am I saying this? I cannot identify myself using my finger prints... Perplexed! I too am baffled. Hello, I have fingers, okay.... My sim card' in my smart phone developed a peculiar problem. The 'data package' charged already is in tact. That is, the 'internet' is working. I receive calls. But I cannot make calls! The package includes 100 free SMS per day and unlimited calls. Okay, even SMS can be sent from my phone. Only problem is that I cannot make calls to any number... I consulted the 'service provider'. After a thorough 'check up' of my phone, it was found that there is a problem with the 'sim card' and it needs to be replaced. Here comes the problem. They do not have any issue in replacing my 'sim card...

Lose something, to gain something else....

Recently I lost an important and confidential document (I am not going to tell you what it is; after all, it is a confidential one, you see..!). In our office ...or residence...? It will be great if I know that. Sometime later I might even forget what I have lost..... The sky has not fallen down.... so, it may not be that important as I think.... That is how I consoled myself and all along keeping it (losing the document) close to my chest..... The best idea to (accidentally) find the lost document is to ..... lose something else which is NOT very important.... Subsequently, the unimportant thing might become very important and essential.... That is how it turns out to be, invariably... Anyway, I decided to lose (intentionally) my pen drive. Initially I thought there was no file saved in the pen drive. Nothing to worry..... (more about this later....). Okay, I purposely lost my pen drive. I promptly started my hunting expedition, (to find the lost document) first in the office.......

The most-abused gadget...

I have a smart phone. But I am not smart enough to know what all (not even 10%) it is capable of! I wish to believe I am not alone in this (rather big!) group. Of course I am not that dumb (as you may like to imagine of me!). At least I know how to make calls and receive calls (very basic, right?), use WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger, see my facebook page, browse through some news portals etc. (Am I making you jealous!). But, if you ask me what each and every app is comprised of (the nuances of it), you will beat me hands down. No need to envy me! Yes, I know the basic things. For example, I do not know how to prevent some annoying feeds that crop up in my fb page. I just ignore them and scroll down. Only recently I learnt how to make 'free calls' through Viber. I get video calls on WhatsApp from my son, but I do not know how to call him (video call). Hey! I am a slow learner! Okay.... I still do not know how to see my personal mail inbox on my phone. (May be I am a bit lazy to...
